NFTA Celebrates Earth Week Highlighting Environmental Initiatives

In celebration of Earth Week, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is proud to highlight several major sustainability initiatives that demonstrate the organization’s continued leadership in environmental stewardship across Western New York.

BUFFALO, N.Y- In celebration of Earth Week, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is proud to highlight several major sustainability initiatives that demonstrate the organization’s continued leadership in environmental stewardship across Western New York. From airport wetlands restoration to emission-free transit solutions, NFTA is committed to building a cleaner, greener future—one mile at a time.

Mon. 4/21: Buffalo Niagara International Airport’s Wetlands Treatment System

One of NFTA’s most impactful environmental initiatives is the natural wetlands treatment system at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. This innovative system uses native plant life and eco-engineered basins to naturally treat storm water runoff from the airport’s runways and tarmacs before it enters local waterways. Not only does this help protect water quality and aquatic ecosystems, but it also supports biodiversity and offers a natural filtration system that significantly reduces the need for chemical treatments. BUF was the first airport in the country to use natural methods to treat the chemicals left behind by airplane deicing.

Tues. 4/22: Take Pride in your Metro System

As a reminder, food and drink are not allowed on Metro Bus or Rail cars. For riders’ convenience, there are garbage cans at all Metro Rail stations and most bus shelters. Everyone can help make Metro a cleaner place by putting garbage in its place.

Wed. 4/23: The future looks green with Metro Transit Expansion project.

Every ride on the Metro Rail is a ride toward reduced air pollution, lowered traffic congestion, and a smaller carbon footprint for Buffalo and surrounding communities. It is also four times more energy efficient per passenger mile than cars. Expanded light-rail service will help shape and support sustainable development patterns. LRT projects around the country/world have been shown to promote higher development densities and mixed-uses supportive of more sustainable growth and economic development while minimizing the need to expand roadway and parking capacity. Thurs. 4/24- Fri. 4/25: Bus Rapid Transit & Electric Buses: Driving Toward a Cleaner Future

In addition, the NFTA is advancing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and developing an efficient, high-capacity transit solution that combines the speed with the flexibility of bus systems. BRT systems reduce car dependency, lower overall emissions, and create more walkable, transit-oriented communities. Learn more at https://baileyavebrt.com/

Just one electric bus can take 50 cars off the road with zero carbon emissions. These zero-emission vehicles help improve air quality in urban neighborhoods and are a critical part of NFTA’s long-term climate action plan. This March NFTA-Metro received the Eric County Environmental Management Council Award, which recognizes exceptional projects that are likely to have significate and lasting positive impact on the natural environment.
