UNITS OVERVIEW
BIKE UNIT
The NFTA Transit Police Department’s Bike Patrol Unit was established in 1996 to assist with pedestrian traffic areas. The unit started with two bicycles and just as many officers, but due to the growth of community policing, more officers have been added to the unit.
The surface section of the Metro Rail system, also Buffalo’s Main Street business district, is one of the Department’s foremost concerns. Units also patrol within Metro’s two main Park & Ride lots, and the parking facilities at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
COMMUNICATIONS
The NFTA Transit Police Department’s communications officers perform a full range of radio and telephone duties, dispatching police personnel and equipment. Between two dispatch facilities, sworn officers provide immediate care by accurately evaluating emergencies and routine calls for police services.
Officers also monitor a state-of-the-art surveillance system, which surveys both airport and transit facilities.
COMMUNITY POLICING
The NFTA Transit Police Department takes great pride in its collaborative efforts with the community to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
By working with local groups like the Buffalo Peacemakers and Buffalo Public Schools, the NFTA’s Transit Police have made a concerted effort to “connect and serve” and become a trusted source of help for the traveling community.
PATROL
The NFTA Transit Police Department’s transit resource officers play an important role in forming a positive relationship between the community and the police.
Their frequent trips to different schools and organizations in Erie and Niagara Counties, as well as their presence on transit both before and after school helps to build trust, ensuring kids know they are a resource in times of need.
K-9
The NFTA Transit Police Department’s K-9 unit is one of the largest in Western New York, comprised of explosive detection and dual-purpose narcotic and tracking dogs. These incredibly trained canines play a pivotal role in daily sweeps at NFTA facilities and assisting other law enforcement agencies with investigations.
