The Transit Authority
Police Department was formed in 1984. The Niagara Frontier Transportation
Authority created the Transit Police Department to ensure the
safety of the traveling public. All Transit Police Officers
are New York Certified Police Officers in accordance with the
New York State Bureau of Municipal Police Training. Transit Police
Officers receiving their training at either the Erie County Central
Police Service Training Academy or the Niagara County Law Enforcement
Academy.
The Department's headquarters is located at 1404 Main Street
in the City of Buffalo, with sub-stations
located at the following locations:
Buffalo/Niagara
International Airport
Niagara
Falls International Airport
Metro
Transportation Center, Buffalo
Niagara
Falls Transportation Center
All
underground Metro Rail Stations
NFTA
Boat Harbor/Port of Buffalo
The
Transit Police Department has 86 sworn Officers along with three civilian
staff.
The
Department is divided into two Patrol Divisions:
Rail/Bus
Division - covers Erie, Niagara & Genesee Counties
Airport
Division - covers Buffalo/ Niagara International Airport
& Niagara Falls International Airports
Transit

The
Transit Police Department is a Non Civil Service Agency but does
follow all New York State guidelines and standards established
by the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services
& The Bureau for Municipal Police for testing and hiring of
Police Officer Candidates.
Qualifications:
· Must be 20 years
of age to apply to take the Entrance Exam · Must be 21 years
old at time of appointment to the Police Academy · Must have at
least a High School Diploma or NYS GED · Must be a US
Citizen · Must have a
valid NYS Driver's license at time of appointment · Must have vision
no worse than 20/40 in each eye, correctable to 20/20
· Must be of good
moral character
