ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION UNIT

The Accident Investigation Unit investigates serious motor vehicle accidents, in addition to accidents in which police vehicles and other public safety vehicles are involved. The officers assigned to the Accident Investigation Unit have specialized training and equipment, allowing them to reconstruct how an accident was likely to have occurred.

BIKE PATROL

The Bike Patrol Unit was established in 1998 as an efficient method of policing vast areas of mostly pedestrian traffic. It become an effective tool of the department's community policing efforts, especially in surface section of the Metro Rail system, through the heart of central business district. Bike units also do patrols within Metro's two main Park & Ride lots, along several miles of the Lake Erie waterfront, through the NFTA Boat Harbor and at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

The Bike Patrol Unit also sets up bike rodeos to instruct local youth on bicycle safety and the rules of the road. These rodeos allow the unit to supply bicycle safety helmets, through the help of grant monies, to those children in need.

COMMUNITY POLICING (COPS)

The primary mission of the NFTA Transit Police is ensuring the safety of Buffalo Niagara's traveling public. By working together, through problem solving and collaborative efforts with the community, the Transit Police can maintain the peace, provide safety and security for the transit community and reduce the perception of crime.

To be successful requires the commitment of the Administration, every member of the Transit Police and the transit community, all working together to maintain the department's tradition as a trusted source of help.

FOOT PATROL

Through foot patrol, officers are easily accessible and are often able to deal with community concerns before any call from a police dispatcher. A major advantage of foot patrol officers is their constant visible presence, which acts as a deterrent to crime.

IDENTIFICATION UNIT

The Identification Unit is responsible for fingerprinting subjects, conducting extensive background checks and maintaining status of current IDs. The airport is required by federal regulation to issue identification badges to airport employees whose job responsibilities require them to have access to secured areas of either airport.

K-9 PATROL

The Transit Police K-9 Unit comprises narcotic and explosive detection dogs. Each team undergoes extensive training on a regular basis. These teams are deployed to NFTA facilities daily and assist other law enforcement agencies with investigations.

MOBILE PATROL

Mobile patrol officers support all NFTA properties and facilities. The main advantage of mobile patrol is that officers are able to respond promptly to calls for service.

TRAIN PATROL

Police officers perform inspections of the subway stations and platforms, enforce rules and regulations, and to detect and deter crime. Officers are assigned to uniformed and plain clothes details.
