Transit police officers perform patrol duties, such as traffic control, enforcement, taking accident and crime reports and making arrests. The Bus and Rail Divsion monitors Metro Rail, Metro bus routes and related NFTA properties.

The NFTA operates over 75 bus routes, covering Erie and Niagara Counties, and Metro Rail, a 6.4 mile light rail rapid transit system. Metro Rail has 13 stations with a police sub-station located in each. This system carries over 23,000 riders each week day.
