Bike Unit

The Bike Patrol Unit was established in 1998 as an efficient method of policing vast areas of mostly pedestrian traffic. It has become an effective tool of the department's community policing efforts, especially in the surface section of the Metro Rail system, through the heart of central business district.

Bike units also do patrols within Metro's two main Park & Ride lots, along several miles of the Lake Erie waterfront, through the NFTA Boat Harbor and at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

The Bike Patrol Unit also sets up bike rodeos to instruct local youth on bicycle safety and the rules of the road. These rodeos allow the unit to supply bicycle safety helmets, through the help of grant monies, to those children in need.
